Third Graders Explore Sumter’s Rich History

Bringing their South Carolina History lessons beyond the classroom, third-grade students explored Sumter’s rich heritage during a field trip to the Sumter County Museum. Students stepped back in time as they toured the Back Country exhibit, discovering what daily life was like for early settlers in Sumter County. They also learned about the historic Williams-Brice House and Revolutionary War hero Thomas Sumter. By taking advantage of the historical resources in their own community, students made meaningful connections between their classroom studies and the people, places, and events that shaped local history. The teachers are Mrs. Kathy Smith Coker ‘98, Mrs. Anne Gratz, and Mrs. Joy Hendrix.
