Bringing classroom lessons to life through educational experiences beyond campus, Wilson Hall’s ninth-grade students visited the Anne Frank Center at the University of South Carolina in conjunction with their reading of Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night in English class. Located in Columbia, the center is the only official North American partner of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and is dedicated to preserving Anne Frank’s legacy while educating visitors about the Holocaust and the dangers of prejudice and discrimination. During a guided tour, students explored historical photographs, documents, and personal stories, along with a recreation of the Secret Annex where Anne Frank and seven others hid from the Nazis. The visit also built upon the students’ seventh-grade study of The Diary of Anne Frank, deepening their understanding of this important period in history. Students also spent time exploring the USC campus through a scavenger hunt. Through educational opportunities beyond the classroom, Wilson Hall helps students connect their studies to the wider world. The trip was coordinated by their English teachers, Mrs. Molly Matthews and Mrs. Liza Meyers.
